Where is Rajaji National Park located?

Rajaji National Park is located in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, stretching across three prominent districts: Haridwar, Dehradun, and Pauri Garhwal. It is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas, in a region where the Shivalik mountain range meets the Indo-Gangetic plains. This strategic location creates a unique ecological zone, rich in biodiversity and natural beauty.

The park is part of the Shivalik Elephant Reserve and spans an area of 820 square kilometers, making it one of the most significant protected areas for wildlife conservation in India. It is named after C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji), an Indian statesman and the last Governor-General of India.

Rajaji Tiger Reserve lies approximately 240 kilometers from Delhi, making it a convenient destination for tourists and wildlife enthusiasts from the National Capital Region. The nearest airport to the park is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located about 35 kilometers away, while the nearest railway station is in Haridwar, just 9 kilometers from the park’s Chilla Gate.

The park’s location offers easy accessibility through multiple entry points, including Chilla Gate, Motichur Gate, and Ranipur Gate, each leading visitors to distinct sections of the park. This area, with its varied topography of dense forests, grasslands, and riverine regions, creates ideal habitats for a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, and over 300 bird species. Additionally, the presence of the Ganges River, flowing through certain parts of the park, enhances its natural appeal and ecological significance.

Rajaji National Park’s location not only makes it a haven for wildlife but also serves as a major tourist attraction, offering safari experiences and a chance to immerse in the pristine beauty of Uttarakhand’s natural heritage.
